League system explained...

We are experimenting with new match formats and rating systems to make the games more interesting and to level the playing field. Our goal is to offer players of all skill levels enough incentives to play their best, and to emphasize the importance of strategy and shot selection in carrom.

Skill level:

Here is how to determine your level: Play 3 boards of carrom by yourself and count the average number of turns you take to pocket all 19 coins (9 white, 9 black, 1 queen). You can sink the coins in any order, queen must be followed though.

* Advanced        : Less than 30 turns
* Intermediate   : 31 to 50 turns
* Beginner         : More than 50 turns

Every player's skill level will be assessed at the start of the league, which will then be used in the handicap system.

Handicap System:

When matches happen between players of different skill levels, the lower rated player will be given a headstart at the beginning of the game (in other words, the better player is handicapped), thus ensuring a fair match up. The following table shows the starting scores for every match:

You / OpponentBeginnerIntermediateAdvanced
Beginner0 - 08 - 016 - 0
Intermediate0 - 80 - 08 - 0
Advanced0 - 160 - 80 - 0

All games will be played for a maximum of 8 boards, or 25 points, or 45 minutes; whichever happens first.

For example, if you are an advanced player and you play against an intermediate rated player, the game starts at 8-0 in favor of your opponent. You then have to beat your opponent within 8 boards or 45 minutes.

Doubles works pretty much the same way as singles, except that a team's level is determined based on both the players' individual levels, as follows -

* Beginner + Intermediate = Beginner
* Intermediate + Advanced = Advanced
* Beginner + Advanced = Intermediate

As much as possible, pairing amongst same level players will be discouraged. If unavoidable, the level remains unchanged.

Ratings / Rankings:

All players are awarded a rating of 100 at the beginning of the league, irrespective of the skill level. After each game, the difference in points by which you win or lose will be added to or subtracted from your rating, accordingly.

For example, if before a game, say your rating is 98 and your opponent's rating is 117. Lets say you win the game 19-15. You gain 4 points and your rating jumps to 102, and your opponent loses 4 points and drops to 113.

And the end of each league session, all players will be ranked based on their rating.
